Willmar Northwoods League team to unveil name, logo Dec. 2

The Willmar Northwoods League team will unveil its team name and logo Dec. 2 at the Holiday Inn-Conference Center from 6 to 8 pm. The event will feature former Northwoods League player and current Seattle Mariners RHP Chris Jakubauskas. The event also will provide complimentary hot dogs, chips and soda while supplies last. Tickets while supplies last are free of charge and can be picked up at the Holiday Inn starting today.

Yes, I find that time often drags in retirement.

I have a theory about people who say they are busier in retirement than they were in their working days.

My conclusion is that they did not work very hard at the jobs they held in pre-retirement years.

What I’m getting at is that in retirement I watch an awful lot of sports on television and go to as many local athletic events as I can. I’m interested, of course, but also because, for me, in effect, “it’s something to do.”



Willmar gets Northwoods League expansion team

The Northwoods League announced Wednesday that the league will be expanding to Willmar, Minnesota beginning with the 2010 season. A group led by experienced Northwoods League team executives Ryan Voz and Marc Jerzak has purchased the NWL expansion franchise in Willmar and the team will play its home games at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Having his cake and eating it too

Wally Strand was recognized Sunday for his 19 years as organizer of demolition derbies at the Meeker County Fairgrounds. A demolition derby-themed cake marked the occasion, which Strand announced will be his last as organizer. The event was a fitting tribute to Strand's nearly two decades, drawing more than 200 entries and treating a large crowd to about five hours of crashes and smashes.

Teen drives to success

Even though he's just 16 years old, Adam Prieve has been making a name for himself in stock car racing circles. The Litchfield teen began racing go-karts when he was five years old, then graduated to dirt-track stock car racing in 2007. He races every week in Willmar, and regularly adds a second race night at an area track in Sauk Centre, Montevideo or Alexandria.
