Blues play July 23 at Sartell

The Litchfield Blues staved off elimination in the Lakewood League West Playoffs, defeating Sauk Centre 9-1 Sunday in Freeport.

Jon Euerle pitched a complete-game, five-hitter, while Toby Chellin homered in the fourth inning to put Litchfield ahead 2-0.

Litchfield (8-19) plays an elimination game against Sartell at 7:30 p.m. July 23 at Sartell.

The winner of that game will automatically qualify for the region tournament.

The Litchfield/Sartell winner also will play Freeport in the Lakewood League West championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Freeport.


Polingo tied for 22nd at state am

A trio of golfers from Litchfield Golf Club made the cut following the second round at the 105th Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship July 22 at Windsong Farm in Independence.

Joe Polingo followed up an opening-round 76 with a one-over par 72 July 22.

Polingo carded four birdies and five bogeys during his second round, putting him in a tie for 22nd with a two-day total of 148.

Litchfield’s John Spreiter (74-77) and Drew Dvorak (78-73) are tied for 46th at 151.

The top 60 golfers in the field made the cut for the final round on July 23.


Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony Friday, July 11

Litchfield Baseball Association will honor three former Blues Friday with induction in the association’s Hall of Fame. Jeff Wollin, Andy Johnson and Troy Urdahl will be honored prior to the Blues game against Bird Island Friday, July 11, at Optimist Park.

Slinden shines at state

ACGC junior Liberty Slinden holds her medals after winning the Class A state shot put and taking second in the discus at the girls state track and field meet Saturday in St. Paul.



Slinden wins state shot put championship

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City junior Liberty Slinden's first state track and field championship could not have gone much better.

One day after finishing second in the discus, Slinden won the Class A shot put title June 7 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Slinden's throw of 41 feet, 11 inches was more than a foot better than second-place finisher Leah Dietel of Jordan.

Slinden's effort single handedly placed ACGC 13th in the Class A state team standings.

Litchfield's Abby Goraczkowski scratched on her three throws and did not make the finals.


Slinden second in state discus

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City's Liberty Slinden finished second in discus at the Class A state track and field meet June 6 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Slinden posted a throw of 136 feet, 3 inches in the event.

Eden-Valley-Watkins/Kimball's Courtney Nistler placed sixth in the discus (127-7).


Dragons 7th at Class AA girls golf tourney

The Litchfield girls golf team shot 406 on a wind-swept Ridges at Sand Creek golf course, finishing seventh at the Class AA state tournament June 6 near Jordan.

Litchfield's two-day total of 805 was just two strokes behind sixth-place Holy Family Catholic.

Minnewaska Area won the meet with a score of 643, while second-place Red Wing was 54 shots off the pace.


Nelson tied for 74th at state

Litchfield senior Zach Nelson finished tied for 74th at the Class AA state boys golf tournament June 6 at Ridges at Sand Creek near Jordan.

Nelson, who played eight holes before his round was delayed by weather, finished at 86 in the first-round.

Nelson shot 92 in Round 2, finishing with a total of 178.

Orono and Detroit Lakes tied for the Class AA team title.

Robert Bell of Pierz shot 151 to win the individual championship.


Play suspended at Class AA boys golf tourney

Litchfield senior Zach Nelson did not finish his opening round at the Class AA state boys golf tournament because of rain and lightning June 5 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Play was suspended at 3 p.m. without any boys finishing their first round.

The boys teed off at 7 a.m. June 6 to complete their first round.

Second-round action is expected to begin at 1 p.m.


Litchfield girls seventh after Day One

The Litchfield girls golf team is in seventh place after the opening round of the Class AA state tournament played June 5 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Becker.

Minnewaska Area leads the tourney with a score of 305.

Litchfield shot 399 as a team.

Kalli Swanson shot a team- low 96 for the Dragons, while Kayla Sommerfeld finished with a 98.

The final round will be played June 6.
