As organizations across the country recognize their volunteers during National Volunteer Week, Augustana Homes of Litchfield surprised one of its dedicated volunteers with a special award.

Ann Konietzko of Litchfield was recognized Tuesday as Ecumen’s Volunteer of the Year. Ecumen owns Augustana Homes, as well as nursing home facilities across the Midwest.

“I feel very honored. I thank everyone that was involved,” Konietzko, 64, said.

Augustana volunteer coordinator Alicia Toutges nominated Konietzko, who has been an active volunteer with Litchfield Area Hospice since it began in 1989.

“She just does above and beyond her call,” Toutges said. “It’s truly an honor to have her as a volunteer.”

From baking bread for the grieving to lending a listening ear, Konietzko’s willingness to be with the families at the end of life is important, Toutges said. She also makes prayer shawls for hospice clients and is active in hospice fundraising.

“Ann is the kind of volunteer that does what is asked of her and then volunteers to do more,” Augustana Social Worker Judy Loecken wrote in a nomination essay.
