Minnesota milk output decreases 0.8 percent

April 2008 milk production totaled 727 million pounds in Minnesota, down 0.8 percent from the 733 million pounds produced in April 2007, according to the Minnesota Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. March milk output was revised to 755 million pounds. Minnesota’s production per cow averaged 1,570 pounds in April 2008, down 40 pounds from last April. The revised March rate was 1,630 pounds per cow. The average number of milk cows on farms in Minnesota during April 2008 was 463,000 head, unchanged from March but up 8,000 from a year ago. Accumulated Minnesota milk production for the first 4 months of 2008 was 2.93 billion pounds, up 0.9 percent from the same period a year ago.
