Small grains started ripening this past week, well behind last year and the 5-year average pace, according to the Minnesota Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Warm weather across the state continued to aid small grain development with nearly three quarters of the crop reaching the heading stage. Adequate topsoil moisture supplies across the northwest district have helped improve the crop condition rating in dry beans, sunflowers, and canola.

Producers harvested 11 percent of the state's first cutting alfalfa during the past week, virtually completing the first harvest of the crop, according to the Minnesota Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Warm, dry weather across the state aided small grains development with more than half of the crop reaching the heading stage. Producers were also able to finish planting sweet corn and continue spraying activities.

Savoring the season

Nearly all strawberry lovers will tell you that the Minnesota strawberry season is just too short. It seems to sneak up in mid-June and pass by in a flurry of summer activities.

This year, however, a late crop is giving strawberry pickers a little more time to stock up on a favorite summertime fruit.

Most berry farms opened last week, a week or two later than usual, due to Minnesota’s cool spring. Because strawberries like cool weather, it’s having a positive effect on the 2008 crop.
