In a land where winter winds and freezing temperatures coop up people for months on end, the first hint of summer has the power to pull them from their hibernating homes.

For we, Minnesotans, sure love the outdoors.

“For seeking peace and quiet, (or) outdoor enjoyment individually or for families, they need to check the park system out,” Meeker County Parks Supervisor Myron Dvorak said.

Meeker County began developing county parks in the 1960s after the establishment of the Meeker County Park Board. Through aggressive efforts to acquire land and develop county parks, the county park system consisted of seven parks by the end of the 1970s.

Today, Meeker County has 10 parks — all but one on a lake or river.

“We have just an enormous amount of lakeshore footage,” Dvorak said.

Over the years, the Park Board has continued to invest in its parks. Currently, the focus is on building new, clean restroom facilities, Dvorak said. The parks department is also working to install park identification signs and landscaping to enhance the beauty and unification of the system.
